The Most Uncomfortable Kiss

One of the kisses that goes down in history as the LEAST comfortable kiss ever is the first kiss in front of your parent's or your partner's parents. I still remember my grandmother telling me about the first time my father brought my mother home to meet the folks. Just before my father and mother left to drive back to college, my father grabbed my mother and planted a big wet kiss right on her lips in front of his open-mouthed parents, as if to tell them, "I have a girlfriend and there's nothing you can do to keep us from being together!"

"My boyfriend is always trying to kiss me in public. I tell him to stop, but he thinks it's funny. Sometimes I think that I shouldn't care what other people think, but I do. It's gross! Maybe he's just doing it so that other people know he has a girlfriend, I don't know. Would you set him straight?"

Hi, Anne! Thanks for your question.

The issue of whether or not a couple should kiss in public is a biggie, and I don't want to give any advice without making it clear what people are saying on both sides.

Advocates of Kissing in Public

People who think that kissing in public is a good thing argue that kissing is a natural expression of affection. There's nothing "wrong" or "dirty" about it at all. Like saying, "I love you," or giving someone a hug, it's something that's perfectly acceptable anywhere, any time.

Fans of kissing in public also often support being open about one's emotions. If you care about someone and want to show it with a kiss, why should you hide it or wait until you're alone? A kiss in public is the easiest way to declare to the world that you care about a person and aren't afraid to show it.

Too, people who enjoy kissing in public usually don't care what others think. It's their choice to decide how they will display their affection towards their partner, just like it's their choice to decide what to wear in the mornings. No one has the right to dictate whether or not we should be allowed to kiss in public. It's a matter of personal choice.

Opponents of Kissing in Public

People who think that kissing in public should not be allowed have a variety of perspectives to support their belief. Some point to French kissing or full-blown make-out sessions as examples of what is inappropriate behavior in public. Kissing in a sexual way belongs behind closed doors, because it's the business of the couple involved and no one else's.

Kissing in public can also make those around the kissing couple uncomfortable. There's a time and a place for everything, and a couple who wants to kiss should be aware of how their actions will impact those around them. For example, kissing is often not appropriate behavior for the workplace, in which a professional standard must be adhered to.

Finally, opponents of kissing in public point out that there are many other ways to show affection. A couple can hold hands, gaze adoringly into one another's eyes, and murmur sweet nothings. They can lean on one another with heads touching or even rub cheeks. A chaste kiss on the hand or forehead can communicate affection without offending others. Plus, not being able to kiss in public turns up the heat by making the couple wait until they are alone to finally indulge their passion for one another.

Should You Kiss in Public?

Ultimately, you have to make the decision about what you are going to believe and what makes you feel comfortable. If you don't feel comfortable kissing in public, talk to your partner about your feelings and discuss other ways that you can show affection in public. Perhaps he can kiss you on the cheek instead. Perhaps you can hold hands. Perhaps a simple peck on the lips in public would be okay, but an open-mouthed pash would not.

Most importantly for you, Anne, is that you explain to your boyfriend how upset you are when he kisses you in public. If he's doing so because he thinks it's funny, he may not realize what a serious issue it is for you.
